After their brief almost faux pas with luka chêne , Kepler manages to drag Ash through the crowd at the fringes of the dance floor, boots squeaking slightly on the tile.

“It’s-- really easy,” he said, with a roll of his eyes because the waltz was about the only athletic thing he could do. “And ballroom dancing looks good on a college resume.”

He frowned at Ash’s cast. “Ok. So it’s gonna be a little weird, but, if anything I’ll just… put my arms around your shoulders! Yeah. There.” And he did that, coming up on his tiptoes in order to do so, one hand splayed over the back of Ash's neck, the other grabbing his own wrist.

“I can’t imagine everyone here is gonna dance like a Kalosian heiress, right?”

Being dragged through the crowd, bit by bit, Ashley's dreamily following along, eyes closed. He's grinning. hell, he looks happier than he has in a long while.

It was easy? Huh. He had no idea how to do the waltz, but he imagined it was hard. But, thinking how it looked good on a resume, Ashley's mouth opens. Right! People did stuff to look good for college! Considering how little schooling and college he actually had, he never even comprehended that.

One arm around his neck, one to his wrist, Ashley smiles the whole time, cheeks red beneath the red mask.

"Oh no, I was imagining everyone would get down and do the Alola twist or something." Ashley is snickering a little, a bit of teasing as he hears the music. Sure, Kep was into sciences, and their second bedroom was a lab for him, but Ash understood food science at best. This, however? He was indulging as much as he could, a serious smile on his face.

He'd enjoy this dance. Even if Ash was completely awful at it.

Kepler’s head falls back and he laughs. His body begins to move of its own accord, directing their motions in a gentle, back and forth sway, at first.

“It’s really easy. Waltzing. You just… walk in a square in a four count. Three and a half, technically, but, who’s counting?”

Everyone in polite social circles from 1 AD on up was counting, Kepler, but.

“I guess I’ll lead. So it’s step- back- and side and-- back- and…”

It’s sloppy. They're out of practice-- well, Kepler is, and Ash isn’t even in the same game. But it’s fun. It’s fun, and who cares?

“You feel okay, right?” Kepler asks, suddenly frowning, remembering that Ash is hurt and dealing with the after effects of some pretty life-changing shit. His anxiety spikes. “If you start to feel icky, we can go.”

When Kepler got them in the motions, directing them, Ashley attempts to quantify the idea. So a square in a three and a half count. Like, music? Ashley doesn't fully understand it, but he follows along with Kep, smiling the whole time, as they step- back- side- back. Sure it's sloppy, but the thing that Ashley had fun with was Kep.

Anxiety gets to Kep, and Ash shakes his head. "Kep. I'm having fun." He says it to wash away any lasting bit of anxiety he can. Ashley wasn't lying, he was having fun. Sure, his footwork was atrocious, and with one arm, he can hardly work it with Kep.

But even with all that, he dances with his boyfriend all the same.

"Are you?" Step- back- side- back. It's slow going, it's hard, and even if Ashley fails at it, he's failing with Kep. That's good enough for him. "Don't worry. Anything with you is fun to me."

Moving to grab his hand, Kepler feels Ashley's lips kiss those delicate fingers. He would let Kepler's hand go back where it needed to, but his silvers never once let Kep think he wasn't having fun behind that mask, if not his pearly white teeth.

Sides. It was Kepler's turn to treat him like a Disney princess! So Ashley got more into it, just to show Kepler he was serious!

Maybe it’s the painkillers or maybe it was him being so out of his element but Kepler can see the gears turning in Ash’s head and he looks so focused and so cute that Kepler laughs.

“Sorry,” he says, hiding his face in the lapels of Ash’s jacket, “sorry, sorry. I don’t mean to-- anxiety all over everything. I just want you to be comfortable.”

When he looks up next his smile is bigger and steadier. “Yeah. I’m having fun. I’m--”

Ash takes his hand and presses his lips against Kepler’s fingers; Kep’s face reddens under the spread of his mask and he exhales, slow and measured, a breath he’d been holding for a hot second, goosebumps rising on his forearms as he looks into Ash’s eyes.

The music crescendos.

“I’m having lots of fun,” he says, and if his voice is pitched up a little and slightly breathier, who’s going to hear it but Ash?

Every step, every movement, it's still hard to grasp, but he would do it every time. There is an effort, an attempt made as he tries to adjust. He's no natural, and there's still a clumsy edge, as if Ashley's effort is precisely why he isn't stepping on feet, but seeing that Kepler laughs, and hides his face, only to give the biggest smile lights Ashley's world.

He can't help but smile at Kep's reddening face, and once the music crescendos, its a whisper on the wind, and only meant for the recipient of the message. "Good."

He has no idea what he's doing, every step, every movement being cute, yet his feet are only moving to match. He does seem to be improving, even with one arm. He almost seems serviceable. He's dancing! Even if he doesn't realize it yet.

"You know, I bet there's a nightclub somewhere in Hoenn we could go to together." A sly grin, part of him wanting to see Kepler out of his element. The other half wanting to spoil him. "When my arm gets better, that is." He'd at least make sure not to go without healing up first. The Winter Masquerade, his birthday, these are simply just cheat days.

Just mean he was going to spoil Kepler in the meantime.

Kepler doesn’t care if they’re really dancing or not. For once in his life, he doesn’t give a flying fuck what other people think. So what if they’re doing a broken-down version of a glorified hokey pokey? One foot in, one foot out?

Even as the pace picks up, Ash seems to get the hang of it, he’s still wearing a cast. It’s never going to be perfect and yet somehow it already is.

“A nightclub?” Kepler all but squeaks, eyebrows going up in a look of half-alarm, half-question. An image of strobe lights and scantily clad people flashes in his head… or maybe it was just the Batman Beyond intro. “You-- you’d really want to go? I mean, is that something you’d like to do?”

Because he’d do it for Ash, and with Ash. There’s not a whole lot he wouldn’t do, for and with Ash.

There is a lot in this world Ash would do with Kepler. This dancing was just one of them, the way they move together. There's no trophy at the end of the rainbow, but to him, everything fades away. He can't help but smile wider and wider. Love drunk was the term that came to mind. He can feel his heart making such heavy pangs, as they sway back, they sway forth, they sway in circles.

His heart is moving so much in his chest, almost the same.

To the question, Ashley chuckles. "Hell yeah, dude. With you? We'd be the hottest couple there, hands down. I'll even workout for it." Nothing like showing off that not only he had a body-ody-ody, but Kep had that.

Kep was a positive influence on his life for sure, because it felt like every trauma just undoes itself, each step they take lightens that load on his psyche.

This was what happiness was made of.

Kepler’s face colors visibly at the suggestion of hottest couple there. It’s astounding, to him, because he never imagined himself having a significant other let alone being part of an attractive couple. Oh, how the world has changed.

“It… might be fun,” he says, and instead of his voice being full of his usual trepidation, it’s burgeoning with excitement. Suddenly the future doesn’t seem so frightening, and the things that usually fill set his brain abubble with anxiety just… don’t.

“You don’t need to work out!” Kepler says, though he does almost start drooling at the thought of jacked Ash in neon paint under a blacklight. Wow, that’s a very specific image that he didn’t realize did it for him until right now.

“I love you just as you are.”

"I know. Something I've always wanted to do though." It is slightly spurred on more with the idea that it's for Kepler, but Ashley always wanted to at least get somewhat built. Not way too much, but enough so he could see gains on himself. All it takes is a workout routine, and a diet. He has one down already.

Knowing he'd be loved no matter what he did has Ashley doting, and if little cartoon hearts were a thing, Kepler might see them. It's just in how he looks to him, and as they continue their dance, even if Ash isn't great, even if he's awful at this, flat-out terrible, he still wants to do it with Kep.

"Same for you."

His heart swells, and he chases that feeling. Pulling Kepler's hand with his only good hand, he places it to his own chest over his heart. "Just the way you are." He lets Kepler's hand back, realizing he might be making it hard to dance like this, but he can't help it! Kep does this to him!

A small hiccup. Huh. That champagne hit harder than he thought. He was just lucky he wasn't showing two left feet! Bewildered for the moment, he begins laughing. "Hahahaha. Probably should have had some food in our stomachs before we got here, huh?" That big, stupid, toothy grin came back. Come to think of it, he's a lot happier after Mt. Pyre as is.

Partially Kep's doing, no doubt.

“Well, I wouldnt complain,” Kepler says, in a coy sort of half-tone suggesting the hint of a suggestion, “but don’t do it on my account.” They have already established, many times over, that Ash is more than capable of carrying and lifting Kepler, in a multitude of ways.

They pause there, on the dance floor, as Ash presses Kepler’s palm over the former’s heart, and Kepler flexes his hand, presses against it ever so lightly. He can feel it speaking in Ash’s chest, a steady, constant, slightly fast thump.

He remembers feeling it when they were skin-to-skin, Kepler almost perched on Ash’s collarbones. Remembers asking if he made Ash nervous, but knew it to be something different, now. If he could trap this moment and keep it forever he would. Flexing his fingers, he presses the pads of them around the general shape of Ash’s heart. Mine, he thinks, leaning into him as the song ends.

Then ash hiccups and laughs.

“Oh, right, food. You should eat!” He forgot that Ash was on painkillers and also alcohol. He forgot a lot of things until right now.
